YOGYAKARTA CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2005

From Noise to Silence

YCMF 2005 is unique event celebrating the diversity of contemporary music today. This time the festival has been designed and organized by ICCY - Independent Composers Community Yogyakarta working in collaboration with HIMA Musik ISI Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta City Cultural Council for celebrating the 249th Anniversary the City of Yogyakarta and will be hold from 28-30 September 2005.

YCMF 2005 features music by composers from Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, USA, Japan and other Asian countries. 2nd edition to a program of concerts there will be workshop and discussions with guest performers, composers, and expert speakers in the field of contemporary music. These discussions will be an open forum for speakers and audience alike to contribute ideas about the current developments in contemporary music.

The first YCMF took place in 2004 and represented a continuation of other contemporary music events regularly held in Yogyakarta. However before 2004 such event usually only offered the opportunity for amateur composers to perform their music. Subsequently these events have attracted the attention and support from the contemporary music scene both in Indonesia and abroad. Several composers suggested that there event have should merge to from a contemporary music festival. There was a clear need to create a platform where intellectual musical potential could be appreciated and celebrated. So, first YCMF was created, and took place on 4 and 5 September 2004. Since then YCMF has become a prestigious arena for professional composers perform their music.

In YCMF 2005 many genre of Art Music and various types of multi-media will come together. Important current issues as musical styles, techniques, aesthetics and ideologies will be discussed with a global culture perspective. The festival pluralistic nature is reflected in the music of its guest and Indonesian composers, who will have their music performed in public concerts where the audience will be able to appreciate the music directly under a theme "From Noise to Silence".

Yogyakarta has now become the centre of development of contemporary Art Music, and as a result of YCMF it is hopped that participating Indonesian composers will come forward and give their contribution to the music field.
