The Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival was launched in 2004. Since then the event has encouraged an appreciation for and understanding of contemporary music through performances, discussions, educational activities, social events and music students’ interaction with noted composers, performers, and scholars within an environment devoted to creative expression.
The Festival is organized by the Independent Composers Community Yogyakarta in cooperation with Lembaga Indonesia Prancis (French Cultural Centre) Yogyakarta, Cantus Music Centre Jakarta, Pasca Sarjana ISI Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Graduate Studies), as well as various cultural foundations, music lovers, and participators in culture.
Most of the listeners in Yogyakarta are young. There is a growing group of young people who are not afraid of 'difficult' things; they want to free themselves from the grip of consumerist popular culture. They are looking for the 'other', the 'new', and the inexplicable ‘something’ which simultaneously enriches the listener.
Historically, Yogyakarta, has a glorious tradition of new and thriving artistic ideas and endeavors. However, to guard against the uncertain future of musical art, the goal of the YCMF organizers is to reinvigorate and continue this tradition providing performance opportunities, encouraging the composition of new works; and presenting the stylistic diversity of this century's music through well-balanced and exciting concert programming.
The festival will take place from October 26-28, 2008 in Pasca Sarjana ISI Yogyakarta and Lembaga Indonesia Prancis Yogyakarta.
